Find the meter (1 reply)

Ok, so this is not exactly a "new" trick - it just totally impressed me today. . .(he always impresses me!)

mr Darcy's alert chain at home is like this:
grab a bringsel from a low shelf in the kitchen,
come to mom who says , "is it Abi? Where is Abi?"
follow Mr D to Abi
Abi says "what is it? Show me"
(he either waves for a low or bows for a high)
Abi says, "got to check. Get the meter"
Mr D takes the bringsel back and comes back with meter
Abi checks while mr d watches and then tells him "go tell _____"

soooooo - he knows how to get the meter BUT it is usually on the same Los shelf ad the bringsel. Today, when we told him to get the meter, he went to the table, it wasn't there. He began to search - circled and focused into a small zone- it was buried under a pile of stuff in Abi's room. I had followed him to abi's room when i saw the meter was not in it's regular spot- so I watched him search abi's room (ha ha - she IS 16 - no more descripton of her room is needed!! Ha ha )
I could not believe he could find it and by pass a million other things in her room -

Sooooo while he was searching for meter, I had Abi hide. So, when he carried the meter back to where she *had* been, I told him -"got to find Abi". Poor guy- had to go back to work, searching house - to find Abi hiding behind a door in the other end of the house!

We hid the meter several more times all over the house and gave the command "find the meter" and he could find it ANYWHERE - even deep in a
backpack!!

You are right, Ann, he IS intense!!!

a fun training game - (no replies)

i wanted to write about a great game that we played at rita martinez's training session. we had hayden and onyx here for a week of surf camp and diabetic dog training. justin and hayden played a game with their dogs similar to musical chairs. the dogs and the boys LOVED it.

dogs were out of vest and off leash-the boys wandered around the space keeping their dogs engaged until rita called out a command. the boys needed to put their dog in the command-give a stay command and then run to a chair and sit down. the dogs needed to stay in the command as well as the boys needed to be sitting. there was so much distraction-energy-focus necessary to complete these activities that it was exciting. the dogs could not wait to start. onyx-who is more distractable-had a difficult time staying in the command-because he enjoied running with hayden to the chair. this game works on the relationship of the team, trust, focus. it was a great game. rita said that her adult teams have more fun with this too-not just for kids game!

rita is going to plan this game at the next training seminar! i think you all will LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

duke has many tricks-his big one is to wave to people. he is a huge black dog and some are afraid of him! this trick is an ice breaker for people.
