Ear cleaning/maintenance solution (2 replies)

Rachel asked me to post my "recipe" for ear cleaning solution. It was given to me by my cocker spaniel breeder. I have used it consistently on my cocker's ears and now at almost 5 years of age has never had an ear infection. I have given the recipe to my veterinarian and he is recommending it to clients whose dogs have ear issues.

1- 16 oz bottle isopropyl alcohol
16 drops gentian violet
2 tsp. boric acid powder (pharmaceutical grade)

Mix ingredients in sterile bottle (with squirt type lid) and shake well. Shake well before each use. Fill ear canal with solution and massage ear canal. You can let the dog shake their head or wipe out excess with a cotton ball. If you decide to let them shake their head, either do it in the shower/tub or outside as the purple color will stain clothes and wall coverings!

I use it each time the dog is bathed and weekly for maintenance on the cocker. The labrador gets it each time he does any waterwork and after a bath.

I had to get the gentian violet and boric acid powder from an old fashioned pharmacy, Walgreens etc do not carry it. Both products are also available online.

I know if a dog is having chronic gas that you probably need to change its food but what do you give your dog when it gets occasional gas? I feel awful taking lucy somewhere with me on the rare occasions when she's passing gas left and right. Is there something I give her to help?

We are taking Remi on a hunting trip to Laredo in 2 weeks. The ground has lots of thorns growing over it. Like grass with thorns. It's hard to see and since it's everywhere impossible to avoid. It's going to make potty breaks tricky. Would mukluks work for Remi's feet or is there something else that someone could recommend?

The only place I can get SP is at a small hardware store 20 miles south of us. We hardly ever go that way so I'm making a special trip just for the food. I have to drive 20 miles to get groceries and everything else also but that town doesn't have anyone that orders SP so I was going to look for a comparable food at one of the stores there.

Deanna kept Remi with her during church this week and she said he was a little angel! That wasn't my thought but OK! I won't be keeping him with me anymore. He just hates being away from her so he misbehaves while he is with me. Anyway, my question to everyone is: What can I use on Remi so that it will get rid of his doggy odor? We wash him twice a week and it doesn't help. We washed him before we went to church and Deanna's boyfriend Zak said he smelled! I hate taking him to stores (though we do all the time). We have tried lots of shampoos. Does any one have any suggestions on shampoo or doggy cologne? Do we need to buy a blow dryer? Please I will try anything!!
